9AM Service

He took our infirmities and bore our diseases. Matthew 8.17

A note regarding Posture: At 9:00 AM our service is ordered according to the Book of Common prayer and this bulletin contains suggestions for appropriate posture, following the BCP rubrics.   The general understanding is that we  stand for praise, sit for instruction, and  kneel (or sometimes stand) for prayer. These are suggestion only – if you find any suggested posture difficult, please do what is necessary for you.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
A Reading from Isaiah 40:21-31
21Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

PSALM 147:1-12, 21
1 Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! *
how pleasant it is to honour him with praise!
2 The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; *
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted *
and binds up their wounds.
4 He counts the number of the stars *
and calls them all by their names.
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; *
there is no limit to his wisdom.
6 The Lord lifts up the lowly, *
but casts the wicked to the ground.
7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; *
make music to our God upon the harp.
8 He covers the heavens with clouds *
and prepares rain for the earth;
9 He makes grass to grow upon the mountains *
and green plants to serve mankind.
10 He provides food for flocks and herds *
and for the young ravens when they cry.
11 He is not impressed by the might of a horse, *
he has no pleasure in the strength of a man;
12 But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him, *
in those who await his gracious favour.
21 He has not done so to any other nation; *
to them he has not revealed his judgements. Hallelujah!

Leader: Glory be the Father and to the Son, and the Holy Ghost;
All:    As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:29-39                  Stand
29As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” 38He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” 39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:29-39
29 After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away. 31 So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them.  32 That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. 33 The whole town gathered at the door to watch. 34 So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.  35 Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. 36 Later Simon and the others went out to find him. 37 When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”  38 But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” 39 So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.

PRIMATE'S WORLD RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FUND

INITIAL PWRDF RESPONSE - HORN OF AFRICA
Thousands of people are fleeing Somalia for desperately overcrowded refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya.  Livestock are dead.  There is no water, the soil has turned to dust.  10.7 million people are affected.  The numbers are staggering, and the images are horrifying.  This is the reality for so many people living in the Horn of Africa as the drought in the region continues, and the UN declares a famine in Somalia.

PWRDF
is responding to this emergency through the ACT Alliance and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.  An initial $75,000 has been sent from PWRDF, supporting work in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

Canadian Government Matching Donations for Horn of Africa Drought Relief July 22, 2011
The Canadian government has created the East Africa Drought Relief Fund to match donations made by Canadians to eligible charities. For every dollar an individual Canadian donates over a 10-week period (retroactive to July 6, 2011, and ending September 16, 2011) to an eligible registered Canadian charity responding to the drought in East Africa, the Government will contribute an equivalent amount to the East Africa Drought Relief Fund. The Government of Canada will administer the relief fund separately, disbursing funds to organizations best suited to make an effective and real difference in the lives of people affected by the drought. You can donate to this relief effort by putting your gift on the offering plate clearly marked: East Africa Drought Relief Fund

Thank you for supporting the Primates World Relief and Development Fund

Annual Meeting – February 12, 2012
After the 10:30 Service on 2/12/12 we will have our Annual Meeting. Child care will be provided during the meeting. Canon 2 sets out the rules regarding meetings and membership. Generally: If you are 16, worship and receive communion here regularly, and are a regular contributor to the ministry of the parish - financially and otherwise – then you are eligible to attend, vote and be elected to offices in this parish. A full attendance is important – so please plan to attend.

Nominations: As our Annual Meeting approaches we have begun the process of gathering nominations for members of Vestry, Churchwardens, and Synod Delegates. Nominations can be made from the floor at our Annual Meeting (and provided the nominee meets the criteria and consents to the nomination, would be added to the ballot.) However each year we strike a Nominations Committee which attempts to create a slate that is presented to the annual meeting. Members of the parish are invited to suggest names to the Nominations Committee.   You can put forward your own name if you are interested or you can suggest someone else. Speak to any of the following members of the Nominations Committee: Archdeacon Hodge, Rick Peacock, Jack Morris, Cindy Price, or Charlotte Roberts.  Here are the positions for which we are seeking nominations (basic criteria for nominees is set out above):
Church Warden (2 to be elected)
Past Church Warden (1 to be elected – must be a former Churchwarden of this parish)
Chapel Steward (must attend worship at St. Paul’s, Oak Point)
Chapel Warden (must attend worship at St. Peter’s, Wickham)
Members of Vestry: Our norm is 9 members, which includes the Chapel Steward and the Past Church Warden plus 7 other persons)
Members of Synod: We need at least 6 nominations, the first three are become our Delegates to Synod and the next 3 the alternates.

CHRISTIANITY 202
An evening a week for eight weeks to learn more about the Christian Faith from several different perspectives, to help gain a broader view of what Christianity is about, who we are, why we are here and why the Nicene Creed is a necessary core summary of what we believe. The course begins on Monday, January 30th at 7pm at the Church of the Resurrection. The format will be watching a video, and then a discussion. Everyone is welcomed! For anyone interested there are some information sheets at the back explaining each week’s session. Any questions please ask David Wilson.

CHURCH NURSERY
With our growing number of infants it is more important than ever that our nursery be up to standard in every way. The Rector is pleased to announce that Erin Smith will be taking responsibility for our Church's Nursery. Erin is an Early Childhood Educator and has some real passion for this ministry -- even more so because she will soon be a mom herself! Clearly Erin will need to do some recruiting of others who are willing to serve in this ministry. The physical space is a bit of a challenge -- as we do not yet have our nursery built. For now we will continue to use the Crying Room for the nursery. Erin will also be reviewing the equipment and setup of that room to ensure that it is safe and properly equipped to meet the needs of moms and little ones. Thank you Erin for taking this ministry on.

PARKING LOT GREETERS
We are looking to build a team of parking lot greeters to assist in parking before our services. We need people able to serve for both the 9AM and 1030AM services. If you are willing to give part of a Sunday Morning to this once a month, please contact Jim Wallace or Rick Clayton.
The need is real! Our upper lot is too small for the attendance at our 10:30 services – and indeed on occasion, both lots together are barely adequate. So it is important we make the most of the space. It would be helpful if some of our able-bodied people would use the lower lot. Also it wold help if people parked a bit closer to each other. Finally – we need to have 4 rows in the upper lot:   one against the building, one at the outside edge, and a double row along the centre. We will have parking attendants out giving direction and assisting at our services – they will even provide valet assistance to those who would appreciate that.   If you are able to assist speak with Rick & Jim who are captaining this ministry.

The Anglican Church of Canada has embraced the MARKS OF MISSION of our worldwide Communion as
foundational for all the ministry we do.  They call us:
To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom.
To teach, baptize and nurture new believers.
To respond to human need by loving service.
To seek to transform unjust structures of society.
To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
Further information can be found on the website: www.anglican.cammarks.

Our Mission and Vision
Our Parish has a Mission and a Vision.
    Mission:
A mission statement seeks to express the long-range understanding of our purpose for being here. Our Church`s

Mission is: “To  be a unified, faith-driven, growing Anglican Church proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, serving the community in traditional and innovative Spirit-led ministries.”

Vision:Our Mission statement sets out in the ``big picture` our self-understanding of our purpose. But churches need not just a sense of long-range mission but also short and medium range goals.   There are so many things we can do as a church and if we attempt them all we probably will not do anything well. So in 2010 we completed a careful consultation with the parish – asking what should our goals be for the next 3 to 5 years. The result of that work was Vision 2012 which gave us three goals. Everything else is secondary.

Our priorities are Y.E.S.

Youth: it is our intent to do all we can to build upon our grow strengthen our mission by and with youth and children.

Engagement: We want to be deliberate about serving the community in which we are placed.

Space: Finishing our space is critical to fulfilling our Youth and Engagement goals. We need to finish the building and create a hall, classrooms, and meeting spaces.

GROCERY FUNDRAISER !
Stop by the table at the back of the church after the service to pick up your Grocery gift cards for Sobeys and CO-OP.  If many or most parishioners supported this little project about $5000 per year would be  gained for parish purposes – without it costing parishioners a dime. Cards may be purchased during the week from the church office.

A reminder that the system has changed at the hospital.  If you are admitted to hospital please be sure to inform them that you are Anglican and you wish a pastoral visit, otherwise our clergy will not know you are there.

HOLY BAPTISM is celebrated in the Parish of the Nerepis and St. John on a regular basis, usually on one of several especially appropriate special Sundays during the year.   The next scheduled Baptism after the Day of Pentecost, will be on All Saint's Day, November 16, 2011.  Candidates and/or Parents are asked to call the office 738 3474 to arrange to participate in the sessions of baptismal preparation. (Emergency Baptism is always provided without delay or preparation.)

If you require a box of OFFERING ENVELOPES please contact Sandra Morton 738 2530 (home)

OFFICE NEWS -  The hours for the Parish Office at 20 Macdonald Avenue are Monday to Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Archdeacon Hodge’s scheduled day-off is Friday.  Announcements for the “News” should be received by Wednesday noon of the week it is to appear.

Donations of Publicly-Listed Securities to Public Charities
Donations to registered Canadian charities are eligible for a charitable donations credit. For individuals with cumulative donations to any charity above $200 in a year, the credit in New Brunswick is calculated as 46.84% of the donation amount.
When a taxpayer donates to an eligible charity securities listed on a prescribed stock exchange (or certain other securities such as units in mutual funds), the capital gain that has accrued on the securities would normally be included in income at an inclusion rate of 50 per cent.  However, to encourage additional donations of listed publicly-traded securities to charitable organizations and public foundations, the government has reduced the capital gains inclusion rate for such donations to zero, allowing a full donation credit with no additional income tax on the gain on the securities which would have been paid if the securities were sold.
The Parish of the Nerepis and St. John has the ability to receive donations of these securities through the Diocese of Fredericton.  This can be a great way to reduce your taxes on capital gains and maximize the amount that you can contribute to the items such as the Capital Campaign.
If you need further information about this opportunity or some assistance in making this form of donation, you can contact the Ven. Vicars Hodge at 738-2055, one of your wardens (numbers in the bulletin) or Jamie Whittaker at 693-7724.

If we meet and you forget me, you have lost nothing. If you meet Jesus and you forget Him, you have lost everything!
REDUCE     REUSE     RECYCLE
Did you know that certain items you now discard such as used postage stamps and Campbell soup labels  can be used by your Outreach team?
Postage stamps help to provide Bibles for Third World Countries.
Soup labels help Salt Reef get resource materials.

Several circumstances of need recently have left the account seriously depleted – and with Christmas fast approaching there will be additional needs. Any financial assistance  parishioners can give with this would be greatly appreciated. Your gift is included in your parish receipt for tax purposes. Simply indicate on your envelope that the gift is designated for the RDA.   Thank you.
