THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

[The leaders enter the church in silence.]

RESPONSORY

Leader All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way,
People And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Leader He was pierced for our sins; his punishment has won our peace,
People And by his wounds we are healed.
Leader O Saviour of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us.
People
Save us and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord.

CONFESSION

Almighty God,
our heavenly Father,
we have sinned in thought, word and deed;
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
We pray you of your mercy, forgive all that is past,
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name.  Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, look graciously, we pray, on this your family,
for whom our Lord Jesus Christ
was willing to be betrayed
and given into the hands of sinners,
and to suffer death upon the cross;
who now lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE PASSION of our Lord Jesus Christ (Dramatic Reading)

THE SERMON

HYMN   "How Deep the Father’s Love For Us"

1. How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That he should give his only Son
To make a wretch his treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns his face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.

2. Behold the man upon a cross.
My sin upon his shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life -
I know that it is finished.

3. I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from his reward?
I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart,
His wounds have paid my ransom.

THE SOLEMN INTERCESSION  [The congregation is invited to sit, stand or kneel for the prayers.]

MEDITATION ON THE CROSS OF JESUS

[A wooden cross is brought and placed in sight of the people and a leader says ...]

Leader Christ our Lord suffered and became obedient, even unto death.
People
Come let us worship.

[Silence]

A MEDITATION ON SUFFERING  [The congregation is seated.]

HYMN   "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" (Rockingham)

1. When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, My God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

3. See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4. Since I, who was undone and lost,
Have pardon through his name and word;
Forbid it, then, that I should boast,
Save in the cross of Christ my Lord.

5. Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a tribute far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my life, my soul, my all.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

CLOSING PRAYER

Send down your abundant blessing, Lord,
upon your people
who have devoutly recalled the death of your Son
in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection.
Grant them pardon; bring them comfort.
May their faith grow stronger
and their eternal salvation be assured.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.   Amen.

[The ministers and congregation leave in silence.]
